128 Online Government Services Restored After Data Center Fire

Daejeon: A total of 128 online government services have been restored following an outage that resulted from last week’s fire at the state data management agency, the government announced on Friday. As of 10 p.m., the restoration rate reached 19.8 percent after 128 of the 647 services affected by the fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) in the central city of Daejeon were brought back online, according to the central disaster response headquarters.

According to Yonhap News Agency, among the restored services were 12 key first-tier government network systems. This marked an increase from a 17.8 percent restoration rate earlier in the day, following the recovery of 12 systems under the Ministry of Health and Welfare. With the extended Chuseok holiday commencing on Friday, Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung stated that the government will expedite efforts to restore the remaining services.

Minister Yun emphasized the government’s commitment to the restoration process, declaring that the seven-day holiday period would be treated as a critical time for recovery. During a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, he assured that the government would act decisively to prevent any disruptions in administrative services and safety management during the holiday.

The extended break, which includes Chuseok, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day, began on Friday and will continue through the following Thursday. Minister Yun also mentioned ongoing discussions with the presidential office and financial authorities to secure reserve funds for the NIRS’ restoration and the relocation of damaged systems to a branch in the southeastern city of Daegu.

He noted that normalizing computer network failures is anticipated to take some time. The government plans to prioritize key systems that are directly related to citizens’ daily lives and will develop separate management systems for these critical services.
