35 pct of Lotto winners say will buy real estate assets with prize money: survey

Around 35 percent of people who won Lotto, South Korea’s most popular lottery, said they will use the prize money to buy homes and other real estate assets, a survey showed Thursday.

It was the result of a survey of Lotto winners last year conducted by the finance ministry’s lottery committee, which also found that three out of every 10 winners would not let others know their fortune.

Of 646 Lotto winners in 2023, 35 percent, or the largest share, said they plan to buy homes or properties with their prize money, followed by 22 percent saying they will use the money to pay their debts and 12 percent said they will help their parents or other family members.

The survey also found that 47 percent of the winners would tell their spouses about the win, while 29 percent said they would not tell anyone.

Asked why they bought lottery tickets, 25 percent said they did so for fun, and 20
percent said they sought big prize money. Some 16 percent said their purchase came after having “a good dream,” such as seeing their ancestors and having a dream about animals.

Of the winners last year, those in their 40s accounted for the largest share, or 33 percent, followed by people in their 50s with 27 percent, those in their 60s with 21 percent and those in their 30s with 14 percent, the survey showed.
