Seoul: BAT Rothmans Far East B.V., formerly known as BAT Korea, has made a notable entry into the South Korean market with the launch of its synthetic nicotine vape product. This marks the first time a major tobacco firm has ventured into this segment in South Korea, which remains unregulated in terms of synthetic nicotine products.According to Yonhap News Agency, BAT Rothmans introduced the "NOMAD SYNC 5000" to the Korean market, capitalizing on the nation's unique regulatory landscape. South Korea is currently the only member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that regulates natural nicotine vape products but lacks regulations for synthetic nicotine vapes. While smaller dealerships have previously sold synthetic nicotine vapes in South Korea, BAT Rothmans is the first major tobacco company to tap into this emerging market within Asia's fourth-largest economy. The NOMAD SYNC 5000 is equipped with 10 milliliters of e-liquid containing 0.9 percent nicotine, capable of delivering up to 5,000 puffs per device. BAT Rothmans, the South Korean arm of the Netherlands-based Rothmans Far East B.V., has expressed its commitment to establishing a quality benchmark in the synthetic nicotine sector. Despite the absence of official regulations, the company voluntarily adheres to local tobacco regulations, including incorporating alerts and graphic health warnings on its products, akin to those required for natural nicotine vapes. The launch has prompted civic groups and e-cigarette manufacturers, including South Korea's leading tobacco company, KT and G Corp., to urge the government to implement regulations for synthetic nicotine vapes. These products currently fall outside the purview of Korean tobacco laws, which classify natural nicotine vapes as cigarettes subject to various taxes. Consequently, NOMAD products are exempt from tobacco taxes and can be sold to underage teens without penalties.BAT Rothmans has voiced its support for amending tobacco laws to apply the same regulations governing n atural nicotine vapes to synthetic nicotine products. A spokesperson for the company emphasized their stance, stating, "We have said we stand for the revision of the tobacco laws to adopt the same regulations being applied to natural nicotine vape goods for our synthetic nicotine vapes."
