National Pension Recipients Surpass 7 Million Mark for First Time.

Seoul: The national pension fund announced on Monday that the number of recipients has reached an unprecedented 7 million this month. This significant milestone comes 35 years after the fund's inception in 1988, highlighting its growing importance in South Korea's social security landscape.According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Pension Service (NPS) revealed in a statement that more than half of South Koreans aged 65 and above are currently benefiting from the national pension. The statement emphasized that the NPS is serving as a crucial safety net for retirees, offering financial support in their post-retirement years. The NPS distributes a total of 3.6 trillion won (approximately US$2.57 billion) each month. Notably, 833,000 of the recipients receive 1 million won or more, illustrating the scale and impact of the pension system on the nation's elderly population. In response to sustainability concerns, the government has proposed increasing the pension contribution rate from the current 9 percen t to 13 percent of income. They are also considering age-based differentiated increases to ensure the fund's longevity amidst demographic challenges.South Korea's pension system was initially created to provide a stable income for retirees. However, it has faced increasing pressures due to the country's rapidly aging population and a declining birth rate. Younger generations have voiced concerns over the adequacy of future pension benefits relative to their contributions, reflecting the broader challenges faced by the system.
