Seoul: SK Square Co. and CJ ENM Co. announced on Wednesday their substantial investment of 250 billion won (approximately US$179.5 million) in the South Korean streaming service Wavve, an initiative aimed at accelerating its merger with competitor Tving.According to Yonhap News Agency, as the primary stakeholders in Wavve and Tving, SK Square and CJ ENM have acquired convertible bonds valued at 150 billion won and 100 billion won, respectively. Convertible bonds offer the holder the option to convert them into a predetermined number of shares of the issuing company's common stock.Wavve, which experienced an operating loss of 80.4 billion won in the previous year, plans to use the newly acquired funds to settle 200 billion won in maturing convertible bonds. This financial maneuver is part of a strategic effort by SK Square and CJ ENM to bolster collaboration between Wavve and Tving, while also enhancing their content production capabilities. The anticipated merger of Wavve and Tving is viewed as a strateg ic response to intensifying competition from global streaming powerhouses such as Netflix. Following the merger, CJ ENM is slated to emerge as the predominant shareholder of the unified platform.Recent industry reports indicate that Netflix currently dominates the South Korean streaming landscape, boasting 11 million monthly active users in the first half of 2024, with Tving trailing at 7.4 million users.
