Seoul: The South Korean military, under the directive of President Yoon Suk Yeol, has enacted emergency martial law in response to perceived threats from anti-state forces. The decree, released by the Martial Law Command at 11 p.m. on December 3, 2024, outlines stringent measures aimed at preserving liberal democracy and maintaining public safety in the Republic of Korea.According to Yonhap News Agency, the martial law decree enforces a comprehensive prohibition on all political activities, including those undertaken by the National Assembly, local councils, political parties, and political associations. Additionally, rallies and demonstrations have been banned to prevent any potential subversion of the state's democratic framework.The decree further criminalizes any acts that deny or threaten the free democratic system, including the dissemination of fake news, manipulation of public opinion, and false propaganda. It places all media and publications under the control of the Martial Law Command to ensure compliance with these restrictions.Moreover, the martial law order prohibits strikes, work stoppages, and rallies that may incite social chaos. It specifically mandates that trainee doctors and other medical personnel who are currently on strike must return to their positions within 48 hours.
