SEOUL: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has filed a new motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, citing his unsuccessful attempt to declare martial law. This move follows closely on the heels of a failed impeachment effort last week, which was thwarted by a boycott from ruling party lawmakers.According to Yonhap News Agency, the Democratic Party's latest impeachment motion is backed by five other opposition parties, signifying a united front against President Yoon. Last Saturday, the initial motion was dismissed due to insufficient quorum as nearly all members of Yoon's People Power Party abstained from the vote. In response, the DP has vowed to persist in its impeachment efforts on a weekly basis.The Democratic Party intends to bring the new motion to a vote during a plenary session scheduled for Saturday. Under existing law, an impeachment motion must be voted on within 24 to 72 hours after being introduced in a plenary session.
