SEOUL: South Korea's industry and defense ministries have signed a strategic agreement to enhance their collaboration in utilizing 3D printing technology for producing discontinued military parts. This initiative, which began in 2017, aims to address the challenges of sourcing parts for warships and tanks, and now seeks to deepen this cooperation further.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministries highlighted that the application of 3D printing technology has been instrumental in improving the operation rate of South Korea's defense systems. By ensuring the availability of essential components for military equipment, the initiative also contributes to the advancement of South Korea's manufacturing capabilities within the 3D printing sector.
The government plans to explore additional avenues for the application of 3D printing technology in other military sectors. Efforts will also focus on fostering a robust supply chain and creating an industrial ecosystem dedicated to military equipment.
Yoon Sung-hyuk, a senior official in the industry ministry, emphasized the potential benefits of the partnership. "Based on the industry ministry's assets, including infrastructure and workforce, along with its research and development experience, we expect to achieve significant results under the partnership with the defense ministry," Yoon stated.
