Seoul: Han Myeong-sook, a South Korean country music artist from the 1960s, died of a long-term illness Wednesday, according to people close to the singer and her family. She was 90.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Han was best known for her 1961 megahit "The Man in the Yellow Shirt." She began her singing career in 1952 as a member of a musical troupe and performed at the U.S. Eighth Army. The song gained immense popularity due to its distinct style, diverging from the trot genre that dominated the music scene at the time.
"The Man in the Yellow Shirt" was later covered by foreign artists, including French singer Yvette Giraud, achieving success as a crossover hit. Han's rapid rise to stardom also led to the production of a film with a similar title, in which she played the lead role.
Han is survived by a daughter and a son.
