Defense Ministry to Consider Internal Reporting Channel for December Martial Law Incident

Seoul: The defense ministry announced on Monday its intention to review the establishment of an internal reporting channel in light of the martial law operations that took place on December 3. This consideration emerges amid ongoing investigations into what has been described as a short-lived episode of martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry's spokesperson, Jeon Ha-kyou, responded to inquiries regarding the necessity of such measures within the ministry, as multiple military officials are currently under investigation for their alleged roles in the failed attempt by Yoon to impose martial law on December 3. Jeon stated during a regular briefing, "As investigations have been taking place, the ministry has not made such measures but will review them. (I) think it would be meaningful."

The emergence of testimonies concerning the brief martial law through media reports has led to calls for an internal reporting system aimed at uncovering more details of the operations. A ministry official noted, "There aren't any specific plans as of yet and further examinations need to be made, such as whether it is legally feasible. While it might feel a bit late, it is worth being reviewed."
