USS Carl Vinson Arrives in South Korea as Show of Force Amid North Korean Threats

Busan: The USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier arrived at a key naval base in the southeastern city of Busan, South Korea's Navy announced. This move reaffirms the U.S. commitment to extended deterrence in response to ongoing North Korean threats.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the nuclear-powered vessel of Carrier Strike Group 1 entered the Busan naval base, marking the first visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier to South Korea since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office. Accompanied by the guided missile cruiser USS Princeton and the Aegis-equipped destroyer USS Sterett, the visit is part of efforts to implement an "ironclad" U.S. extended deterrence pledge. This visit aims to underscore the robust South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture against persistent North Korean threats.

The allies will seek to enhance their interoperability and engage in friendly activities between their naval forces during the visit. Rear Adm. Lee Nam-gyu, director of the maritime operation center at the ROK Fleet, emphasized the readiness of the military to retaliate against any North Korean threat, asserting that the South Korea-U.S. alliance will support peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region through close cooperation.

U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson, who also serves as commander of the U.N. Command and the Combined Forces Command, highlighted the significance of such operations in maintaining regional security. He stated that the Carl Vinson's operations demonstrate a commitment to bolstering the defense of allies and partners, enhancing the ability to respond effectively to threats.

The USS Carl Vinson last visited South Korea in November 2023, shortly before North Korea successfully launched its first military spy satellite into orbit. This visit follows the USS Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Busan about eight months ago, when it participated in the inaugural Freedom Edge multidomain exercise conducted among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.
