Seoul: The Cabinet has approved a series of special bills designed to enhance South Korea's nuclear power plant and renewable energy industries. This move comes in response to the rising demand for electricity driven by climate change and the proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the approved bills focus on the management of high-level radioactive waste, the expansion of the power grid, and the development of the offshore wind power industry. These legislative measures are scheduled to take effect six months after their official proclamation.
The special act concerning high-level radioactive waste management outlines the government's plans to build temporary storage facilities by 2050 and permanent disposal sites by 2060. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage nuclear waste effectively.
Under the power grid expansion act, the government will oversee power cable construction projects and formulate a long-term plan to expand the country's power supply infrastructure. This is intended to ensure a stable and efficient energy distribution network.
In addition, the government aims to advance the offshore wind power sector by supporting its growth and establishing an industrial complex dedicated to wind power generation. This effort aligns with the broader goal of promoting renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
