Seoul: British Ambassador to South Korea Colin Crooks expressed solidarity Wednesday with the victims of a wave of wildfires sweeping through the southeastern region, and with residents of Hahoe Village in the southeastern city of Andong as they brace for the approaching flames.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Crooks conveyed his thoughts and concerns in a message, particularly noting Hahoe Village's significance due to Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1999. He emphasized his support for the efforts of Korean authorities and firefighters in battling the fires, expressing hope for their swift success.
Hahoe Village, located about 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is renowned as a folk village preserving Joseon Dynasty traditions and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2010. The wildfire had approached within 5 kilometers of the village, prompting international expressions of sympathy and support.
In addition to the British envoy, other countries have also expressed condolences. China's foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, extended condolences and sympathy to the victims and their families. Japanese Ambassador to South Korea Koichi Mizushima also shared his sadness over the loss and suffering caused by the fires.
The U.S. Embassy in Seoul issued a message via social media, expressing heartbreak over the devastation and offering hopes for safety and a swift recovery for those affected by the wildfires.
