JCS Chief Calls for Firm Readiness During Visit to Key Missile Units

South Korea: South Korea's top military officer called for overwhelming capabilities to deter North Korea's potential provocations as he visited a unit deploying a bunker buster missile capable of striking underground enemy targets.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo made the remark during his visit to the unit deploying the homegrown Korean Tactical Surface to Surface Missile (KTSSM). The KTSSM is capable of conducting simultaneous precision strikes in a short span of time against North Korea's long-range artillery firepower that threatens the greater Seoul area, in the event of a contingency.

Many of the North's long-range artillery pieces are stationed within striking distance of South Korea's wider capital area. Kim also visited a missile surveillance unit where he inspected the real-time surveillance posture against North Korea's missile threats. He urged military officials to maintain an around-the-clock early warning system that can swiftly detect enemy missiles, the JCS said.
