Lee Jae-myung’s Victory Shifts Focus to Conservative Contest in South Korea

Seoul: With Rep. Lee Jae-myung securing a landslide victory in the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) primaries, the political landscape is shifting focus to the conservative camp as the June 3 presidential election approaches.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the People Power Party (PPP) is currently engaged in its own primaries, featuring a tight three-way contest among former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, and former PPP Chairman Han Dong-hoon. Recent polls indicate a close race among these candidates, with Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo trailing. If no candidate surpasses the 50 percent vote threshold, the top two contenders will proceed to a run-off, with the final outcome to be announced on May 3.

Adding complexity to the PPP's nomination process is the potential candidacy of Acting President Han Duck-soo, who is reportedly considering a presidential run. His recent rise in popularity, attributed to a phone call with former U.S. President Donald Trump, positions him as a significant contender. Han's supporters interpret Trump's inquiry into his presidential intentions as a form of subtle backing, which could influence the Korea-U.S. alliance dynamics if Han were to secure the presidency.

Han's emergence as a leading conservative figure introduces further unpredictability into the conservative primary. His experience in public service, including roles as finance minister, ambassador to the United States, and prime minister, has yet to fully convince observers of his capacity to lead a divided nation. Despite his current role as acting president, the Constitutional Court's recent ruling highlights the limitations of his authority.

The upcoming days are crucial for Han, as he must prove that his rise in popularity is not solely due to external influences like the "Trump effect." To genuinely contend for the presidency, Han must demonstrate his ability to unify the country and address pressing economic and social challenges.

As the conservative primaries unfold, South Korea's political landscape remains in flux, with Lee Jae-myung maintaining a strong lead in public support. The dynamics within the PPP and Han Duck-soo's potential candidacy are poised to shape the trajectory of the upcoming presidential election.
