Seoul: The Military Language School, which was set up by U.S. forces in South Korea to teach English to local soldiers, has closed after approximately five months of operation. Located in western Seoul, the school was also intended to provide instruction on American military methods to the South Korean forces. This initiative came after South Korea regained its sovereignty from Japanese colonial rule the previous year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean National Assembly passed a bill in 1951 to disband the homeland defense forces. This emergency force, comprising 500,000 men, was drafted to combat North Korean communists. However, the forces were sent home on May 12 following criticism over their inadequate leadership and military resources.

These individuals were drafted by the Japanese colonial regime, mainly during the 1940s, to fight for Japan. In 1978, the South Korean government announced a law designating all areas within 12 nautical miles of the country's coast as its territorial waters. This was further acknowledged by the United Nations in 1982, which recognized South Korea's territorial waters within 12 nautical miles and its fishing waters within 200 miles of its coast.
In 1989, the wife of the Joseon Dynasty's King Yeongchin, Lee Bang-ja, passed away. She was originally a member of the Japanese royal family, highlighting the complex historical ties between Korea and Japan. In 1992, South Korea established diplomatic relations with Tanzania, further expanding its international diplomatic network.
In 1994, a significant defection occurred when a five-member family led by the father, Yeo Man-cheol, moved from North Korea to South Korea. More recently, in 2018, South Korea's military decided to remove all high-decibel loudspeakers along the border with North Korea. This action was a step towards implementing an agreement between Seoul and Pyongyang, reflecting ongoing efforts for peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
