Judge Denies Hostess Bar Allegations

Seoul: The judge overseeing former President Yoon Suk Yeol's insurrection trial on Monday denied allegations of being treated to multiple visits to an expensive hostess bar. Jee Kui-youn of the Seoul Central District Court dismissed the allegations at the opening of the fourth hearing of Yoon's trial.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Jee addressed the court, stating, "I know there is much worry and concern regarding the accusations raised against me, but I normally eat 'samgyeopsal' with soju." He emphasized that the allegations were untrue, asserting that he has never considered being treated in such establishments. Jee expressed concern that these "persistent attacks from the outside" during a critical trial could affect the proceedings, and he pledged to maintain a "fair and speedy" trial process.

The allegations were first brought to light by Rep. Kim Yong-min of the liberal Democratic Party, who claimed he received a "detailed tip-off" that Jee had visited a hostess bar multiple times without paying the estimated cost of 1 million won (US$716) to 2 million won per person. However, specific details about the alleged visits, such as their timing or Jee's connection with others involved, remain undisclosed.

The Supreme Court announced last week that it is verifying the allegations' details and is prepared to take action according to relevant laws if the claims are substantiated. Notably, Jee was also the judge responsible for canceling Yoon's arrest in March.
