Ottawa: South Korea's Hanwha Group announced its participation in CANSEC 2025, Canada's largest defense trade show, where it will present a range of advanced defense solutions aimed at enhancing Canada's national defense capabilities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two-day exhibition, set to commence in Ottawa on Wednesday, will feature Hanwha's cutting-edge land and maritime systems. Among the highlights are the KSS-III submarine and the K9 self-propelled howitzer. These offerings are part of Hanwha's efforts to support Canada's defense modernization initiatives.
Hanwha Ocean has proposed the KSS-III submarine for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). The submarine is equipped with both lithium-ion batteries and an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, allowing it to remain submerged for over three weeks and cover a range exceeding 7,000 nautical miles.
Should Hanwha secure the contract in 2026, the company aims to deliver the first batch of submarines by 2032, with the remainder following by 2035. Additionally, Hanwha plans to establish a local In-Service Support (ISS) center in Canada to provide long-term maintenance and upgrades.
Hanwha Aerospace will also spotlight its K9 155-millimeter self-propelled howitzer, which is currently in service in 10 countries. The system, noted for its 40-kilometer range and maximum firing rate of eight rounds per minute, is being proposed for Canada's Indirect Fires Modernization program.
