Seoul: Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung expressed deep condolences Tuesday over the death of former Congressman Charles Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran and longtime supporter of South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee described Rangel in a Facebook post as a "Korean War veteran and true friend" of South Korea. He highlighted Rangel's 46-year service in the U.S. Congress and his role as a founding member of the Congressional Caucus on Korea. Lee emphasized Rangel's importance, stating, "He was a precious companion who shared the pain of Korea's division and dreamed of reunification with us." He further acknowledged that the peace and prosperity enjoyed today are due in part to the dedication and friendship of individuals like Rangel.
Lee expressed his profound sorrow and condolences over Rangel's passing. He also noted that the South Korea-U.S. alliance has evolved from mere cooperation to a "true partnership with shared values and vision."
Rangel, during his congressional tenure, played a significant role in legislative efforts concerning Korea-related issues. He was instrumental in encouraging peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula, facilitating reunions of divided Korean American families, and supporting Korean War veterans. Additionally, he was a strong advocate for the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement.
