SK Innovation Appoints Choo Hyeong-wook as New CEO in Strategic Leadership Restructure

Seoul: South Korea's energy giant SK Innovation Co. announced that its President, Choo Hyeong-wook, has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) as part of a strategic leadership reshuffle.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Choo, aged 51, will take over from Park Sang-kyu, who has decided to resign from the position citing personal reasons. This leadership change follows last year's merger with SK E and S Co., positioning Choo to lead the country's largest energy company. His responsibilities will include managing a comprehensive portfolio that encompasses oil refining, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable energy businesses.

In addition to Choo's appointment, SK Inc. CEO Jang Yong-ho will assume the role of executive president, providing oversight to SK Innovation's affiliates, including the battery manufacturing arm, SK On Co. SK Innovation stated that this leadership transformation aims to stabilize the organization and bolster its business strategies.

The reshuffle comes on the heels of the company reporting a net loss of 125.6 billion won (US$88.4 million) for the first quarter. This figure marks a significant increase from a net loss of 7.6 billion won in the same period the previous year, attributed to falling oil prices and declining refining margins.
