SM Entertainment Strengthens Ties with Tencent Music as Strategic Partner

Seoul: SM Entertainment is set to bolster its strategic partnership with China's Tencent Music Entertainment Group, marking a significant move following Tencent Music's acquisition of a substantial stake in the South Korean company.

According to Yonhap News Agency, SM Entertainment announced on Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tencent Music, aiming to extend their collaboration beyond traditional music distribution. This expanded partnership will encompass the co-production of new idol groups, the expansion of intellectual property (IP) businesses, and the planning of local performances in China.

Tencent Music, a subsidiary of the Chinese technology conglomerate Tencent Holdings, is poised to acquire a 9.38 percent stake in SM Entertainment from rival K-pop agency Hybe. This acquisition, set to be finalized on Friday, will make Tencent Music the second-largest shareholder in SM Entertainment, following Kakao Corp. and Kakao Entertainment, which together hold a 41.5 percent stake.

SM Entertainment emphasized that this collaboration marks the official commencement of closer ties with Tencent Music, following the stake acquisition. The company stated that the partnership will significantly broaden the scope of cooperation.

Under the terms of the agreement, SM Entertainment and Tencent Music plan to debut a Chinese idol group within the next two to three years. SM will handle production aspects, including casting and training, while Tencent Music will be responsible for local promotion and music distribution.

The partnership also aims to develop joint IP initiatives in China, such as photo cards, merchandise, pop-up stores, and video content. Furthermore, the collaboration will extend to SM artists' concerts in China, including the anticipated SMTown Live event in Hong Kong next year. The companies plan to enhance fan engagement through live-streaming platforms like Beyond Live.

SM Entertainment expressed optimism about the alliance, stating that it is expected to create "explosive synergy" in the Asian market by combining SM's content production expertise with Tencent Music's extensive user base and distribution network. The company views this strategic partnership as a pivotal milestone in enhancing its global influence and strengthening its foothold in the Chinese market.
