Ottawa: Hanwha Ocean Co., a major South Korean shipbuilder, announced its collaboration with Canadian security and maritime defense firms as part of its bid for Canada's submarine project. The partnerships were formalized through separate memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with BlackBerry and L3Harris MAPPS during CANSEC 2025, a Canadian defense exhibition held in Ottawa.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the agreements involve Hanwha Ocean working with BlackBerry on cybersecurity and with L3Harris MAPPS on integrated simulation and platform automation technologies. These collaborations aim to bolster Hanwha Ocean's position in the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), a substantial procurement program valued at up to 60 trillion won (US$43.7 billion).
The company emphasized that both Canadian partners possess extensive experience with the Canadian Navy, which could be beneficial for the CPSP endeavor. During CANSEC 2025, Hanwha Ocean presented the KSS-III submarine, which boasts capabilities such as remaining submerged for more than three weeks and an estimated range surpassing 7,000 nautical miles.
