Seoul: President Lee Jae-myung stated the significance of rewarding patriotism as a national responsibility and duty, emphasizing the provision of "special compensation" for individuals who have sacrificed their lives for the nation's safety.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee delivered these remarks during a Memorial Day ceremony at Seoul National Cemetery, marking his inaugural participation in a national commemorative event since his induction into office on Wednesday. He asserted that rewarding patriotism is the minimal acknowledgment for sacrifice and dedication, highlighting the necessity of special compensation for extraordinary sacrifices.
Lee expressed his commitment to enhancing rewards and improving working conditions for military personnel, firefighters, and police officers who demonstrate selflessness in safeguarding the country. He stressed the importance of moving beyond outdated perceptions, pointing out historical injustices where independence fighters suffered while colonizer collaborators thrived, thereby underscoring the need for reshaping national values.
The president articulated a vision of a nation where sacrifice for the community is duly rewarded and devotion is highly esteemed. Although his Memorial Day address did not discuss North Korea or diplomatic issues, Lee pledged to establish a peaceful nation free from war concerns, ensuring a secure society as a tribute to the noble sacrifices made.
Concluding his speech, Lee called for the construction of a nation grounded in peace, democracy, and prosperity, reflecting pride and dignity. The ceremony witnessed the participation of approximately 4,000 individuals, including families of four service members who perished in a recent Navy patrol aircraft crash.
