Seoul: The third and final season of the globally acclaimed series "Squid Game" is set to pose significant questions about the possibility of creating a better world for future generations, as revealed by its director. The series creator, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, during a press conference in Seoul, shared insights into the show's exploration of humanity amidst intense capitalist competition.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang highlighted the dedication poured into the series over the past five years. The finale will feature a confrontation between the main characters, Gi-hun and the Front Man, focusing on their fundamental beliefs about humanity and their worldviews. Hwang described this as a showdown of core values.
The upcoming season, which Hwang considers his favorite, will bring the "Squid Game" narrative to a close. It will delve into the depths of despair, particularly through Gi-hun's journey after the death of his best friend, Jung-bae, in the lethal games. Hwang has previously expressed interest in exploring the end of despair, questioning what remains when hope is extinguished.
Actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, emphasized the series' ability to combine significant themes with individual stories as a key factor in its success. He expressed pride in connecting with a global audience and anticipation for viewers' reactions to the new season.
Lee Byung-hun, portraying the Front Man, attributed the show's widespread appeal to its political and social insights, resonating with diverse cultures and languages worldwide. He noted that audiences connect with the series' messages, contributing to its international acclaim.
Hwang, calling the show's success "miraculous," plans to utilize the experience gained from "Squid Game" for future projects. Although he ruled out a fourth season, he hinted at the possibility of a movie or spin-off, leaving fans with potential new avenues to explore.
"Squid Game" Season 3 is scheduled for release on June 27.
