New Jersey: LPGA veteran Lee Il-hee has reignited her golf career with a remarkable second-place finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, showcasing her enduring talent and inspiring others in the process.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 36-year-old South Korean golfer had previously stepped away from the sport to complete her bachelor's degree, a journey that took 15 years to culminate. She briefly ventured into a career in finance before realizing her passion for golf remained strong. After just 100 days in her new job, Lee returned to the sport, teaching part-time while recovering from injuries to her shoulder, back, and ankle.
On Sunday, Lee led the tournament going into the final round but narrowly missed securing her first LPGA victory since May 2013. She finished just one stroke behind Jennifer Kupcho of the United States, with a final score of 14-under to Kupcho's 15-under. Lee's performance earned her a prize of US$164,136, marking her first LPGA paycheck in several years.
Despite the narrow loss, Lee expressed satisfaction with her performance, particularly given that it was her first time leading into the final round. She noted her initial nervousness but was pleased with her finish, achieving five birdies on the back nine.
Lee also enjoyed the experience of playing alongside Kupcho, commenting on the fun of watching and cheering for her competitor. Her positive attitude and sportsmanship left a lasting impression on those around her.
Amidst her near-victory, Lee received an outpouring of support and messages from people inspired by her journey. Former world No. 1 golfer and close friend Shin Ji-yai was among those who reached out, commending Lee for her inspiring performance.
Lee's return to the LPGA and her inspiring performance at the ShopRite Classic have reaffirmed her love for the game and her ability to motivate others through her journey.
