Seoul: President Lee Jae-myung on Monday called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic crowd crush that resulted in nearly 160 fatalities in 2022. He directed his aides to assist a special investigation committee in conducting an in-depth probe to uncover the circumstances surrounding the disaster, which occurred in the Itaewon nightlife district during the Halloween weekend.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the government started accepting applications for support funds for the victims earlier in the day. The tragic event claimed 159 lives, and it has been a point of concern that although tens of thousands were expected to gather, only about 130 police officers were deployed to the district on the night of the incident.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung reported that President Lee emphasized the importance of supporting the special investigation committee to ensure their activities are conducted efficiently and thoroughly. "The Lee Jae-myung government will carry out the state's responsibility to the fullest and do its best to protect the lives and safety of the people," Kang stated.
Lee also vowed to offer "unsparing" support for the victims and their families. He urged for measures to ensure that the desires and needs of the bereaved families and victims are fully considered, reflecting his commitment to addressing the aftermath of the disaster comprehensively.
