Seoul: South Korea is on the verge of finalizing a significant arms export deal with Poland, valued at approximately $6 billion, for the provision of additional K2 tanks. This agreement, anticipated to be signed later this month, would represent Seoul's largest single arms export contract to date.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the agreement involves the delivery of 180 K2 tanks to Poland. Of these, 117 units will be manufactured by the South Korean defense contractor Hyundai Rotem Co., while the remaining tanks will be produced locally by Poland's state-owned PGZ. A defense industry official confirmed that the signing ceremony is scheduled to occur in Poland later this month.
The contract was initially expected to be finalized late last year but faced delays due to internal issues in both countries, including political turmoil in South Korea following the declaration of a short-lived martial law in December. With these challenges now resolved, the deal is set to proceed, building upon an initial agreement made in 2022 for the supply of 1,000 K2 tanks to Poland.
In 2022, Hyundai Rotem signed a contract worth approximately 4.5 trillion won ($3.3 billion) to provide the first batch of 180 K2 tanks to Poland. The forthcoming agreement is anticipated to surpass the previous contract in value, as it encompasses technology transfers and maintenance provisions. Moreover, the K2 tanks produced in Poland will feature an improved variant.
This deal is part of a broader series of agreements Poland signed with South Korean defense companies in 2022. These agreements, motivated by Poland's defense spending surge following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, included acquisitions of K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers, and FA-50 light attack aircraft.
