Hanwha Receives U.S. Approval to Acquire Full Stake in Austal

Seoul: South Korea's Hanwha Group: South Korea's Hanwha Group announced it has received approval from the U.S. government to acquire up to a 100 percent stake in the Australia-based shipbuilding and defense firm Austal, marking a significant step in its strategy to enhance its footprint in the global defense industry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has granted Hanwha the authorization to increase its existing 9.9 percent stake in Austal to full ownership. Initially, Hanwha had sought CFIUS approval for a 19.9 percent stake acquisition.

CFIUS is an interagency committee within the U.S. government responsible for evaluating the national security implications of foreign investments in U.S. enterprises. Austal operates a prominent naval shipyard in the United States.

The committee has confirmed that there are no unresolved national security concerns associated with this deal, thereby affirming the legitimacy of Hanwha's acquisition ambitions, as reported by the South Korean group.

Hanwha began its investment in Austal with a 9.9 percent stake acquisition in March and has since pursued necessary approvals from both the Australian and U.S. governments to expand its holdings to 19.9 percent.

Austal, headquartered in Australia, is a renowned global defense shipbuilder with significant operations in the U.S., supplying naval vessels to the U.S. Navy.

Hanwha aims to utilize its shipbuilding capabilities to enhance Austal's global market competitiveness while also exploring joint business ventures in the U.S. and Australian defense sectors.
