Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has announced plans to hold a national convention in early August to elect a new leadership team. The convention, scheduled for August 2, is set to appoint a new leader who will oversee the party's major policy agendas following the recent inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung. The new leader will replace the former DP leader, who stepped down in April.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a new Supreme Council member will also be elected at the convention to succeed Kim Min-seok, who has been nominated for the position of prime minister. If three or more candidates express their interest in these positions, a preliminary primary is slated for July 15, followed by regional primaries from July 19 to August 2. The registration for candidates will open on July 10, as confirmed by Rep. Park Ji-hye, the spokesperson for the DP's preparatory committee for the convention.
The newly elected party chair and Supreme Council member will serve until August of the following year, fulfilling the remainder of their predecessors' terms.
