Seoul: Military prosecutors have requested a court martial to grant bail for four detained military commanders over their alleged roles in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law imposition, as their detention periods are soon set to expire, officials said Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the prosecution made the request on Monday for Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, who served as the martial law commander, along with Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo, former chief of the Capital Defense Command, and Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho, former commander of the Defense Intelligence Command.
The prosecution sought bail on the condition that the defendants are prohibited from meeting others related to martial law, among other conditions. This move is attributed to concerns of potential destruction of evidence if the commanders are released without conditions when their statutory six-month detention periods begin to expire later this month.
On Monday, a Seoul court granted a separate request from prosecutors to bail former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was detained for his alleged role in martial law, ten days ahead of his scheduled release. Kim's defense has appealed the decision, claiming it effectively extends his state of detention.
