Seoul: The new chief of South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS), Lee Jong-seok, has called for the agency to maintain political neutrality while pledging efforts towards enhancing national security and peace. In his inauguration ceremony, Lee stressed the need for the NIS to reflect on its past actions and assume full responsibility if necessary, amid public concerns over the agency's political impartiality.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Director Lee emphasized the importance of the NIS remaining dedicated solely to national security and the advancement of the national interest. He acknowledged that there have been instances where the political neutrality of some NIS officials was questioned, which deviated from the agency's core mission. Lee underscored the necessity of honest introspection and accountability, advocating for strict political neutrality and democratic transparency within the organization.
Lee outlined his vision for an efficient and results-oriented NIS, highlighting two primary missions: ensuring a safe and peaceful nation and supporting practical, national-interest-focused diplomacy. Addressing the tense inter-Korean relations, Lee noted the heightened risk of military conflict and emphasized the need for the agency to deploy all intelligence resources concerning North Korea. This would serve to strengthen national security, ease military tensions across the border, and facilitate dialogue.
Furthermore, Lee urged the acceleration of the NIS's scientific and technological intelligence capabilities, including the transition to artificial intelligence-driven operations. He stressed the importance of engaging in early-warning intelligence efforts and gathering advanced information to shape future national strategies, while also providing timely support to relevant government agencies.
