Seoul: Oceans Minister nominee Chun Jae-soo on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to relocating the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan by the end of the year. This move aims to transform South Korea's largest port city into a strategic base for Arctic shipping routes that could significantly impact global maritime trade.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Chun emphasized the importance of preparing South Korea for the era of Arctic shipping routes, signaling his dedication to establishing the country as a global maritime leader. As he prepared for his parliamentary confirmation hearing, Chun highlighted the relocation plan as part of a broader government initiative. This initiative seeks to promote balanced regional development by reducing the concentration of resources in Seoul and enhancing Busan's status as a strategic maritime hub.
Chun's remarks followed President Lee Jae Myung's directive for the ministry, currently located in Sejong, to explore relocation options to Busan before the year's end. The relocation aligns with one of Lee's key election promises to develop Busan into a global maritime center while addressing the economic imbalance centered in Seoul.
Chun stressed the urgency for South Korea to gain a competitive advantage in the Arctic shipping routes. These emerging sea lanes promise shorter and more efficient trade connections between Asia and Europe. He noted that other major economies, including the United States, Russia, China, and Japan, have been actively pursuing these routes.
Prior to his nomination as the oceans minister, Chun served as the sole ruling Democratic Party lawmaker representing a district in Busan, a city traditionally dominated by the main opposition People Power Party.
