Seoul: LS Cable and System Ltd., along with its undersea communication cable subsidiary, announced their participation in a major telecommunications infrastructure project led by a global consortium that includes Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
According to Yonhap News Agency, Microsoft, AWS, South Korean information and communication technology solutions provider Dreamline Co., and Japan's Arteria Networks Corp. have formed a consortium for the Japan-Korea Submarine Cable (JAKO) project. This initiative aims to establish a cutting-edge submarine communications network connecting South Korea and Japan.
LS Cable stated in a press release that they have been granted the responsibility to oversee the entire project on a turnkey basis, encompassing engineering, procurement, and construction. This project marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a South Korean cable company has secured an international submarine communications project in this format.
The JAKO project plans to build a 260-kilometer submarine telecommunications cable network connecting South Korea's southern port city of Busan with Fukuoka in Japan, with an expected completion date in 2027. The project is anticipated to aid Microsoft and AWS in effectively managing the escalating data traffic spurred by the growth of artificial intelligence and cloud services in Northeast Asia.
LS Cable and LS Marine Solutions have expressed their intention to continue expanding their presence in the submarine infrastructure market.
