Seoul: LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's leading home appliance maker, said Monday it came close to meeting its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target in 2024, driven by the adoption of high-efficiency equipment and expanded use of renewable energy.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in its 2024-2025 Sustainability Report, the company stated that its combined Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions reached 910,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2) last year. The figure is close to its 2030 goal of 878,000 tons and represents a 53 percent reduction from 1.93 million tons in 2017.
LG has pledged to cut emissions by 54.6 percent from 2017 levels by 2030. Its renewable energy conversion rate reached 14.4 percent in 2024. Emissions generated during the use phase of the company's seven major product categories were reduced by 19.4 percent from 2020 levels, nearing its 2030 reduction target of 20 percent.
The company surpassed its 2030 waste recycling goal ahead of schedule, achieving a 97.4 percent recycling rate across global facilities in 2024, compared with its target of 95 percent. LG recovered 532,630 tons of used electronics in 56 countries last year, bringing the cumulative total since 2006 to over 5 million tons. Its use of recycled plastic rose 36 percent on-year to 74,079 tons in 2024.
