North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un Pays Respects at Mausoleum for 31st Anniversary of Kim Il-sung’s Death

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the death of state founder Kim Il-sung. The visit, which took place at midnight, was reported by North Korea's state media. Kim was accompanied by key party officials as he paid tribute to his grandfather, who passed away on July 8, 1994, at the age of 82 due to heart failure.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Jong-un's visit included a ceremonial gesture of deep respect towards both Kim Il-sung and his father, Kim Jong-il, as acknowledged by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The agency stated that Kim made "a deep bow of best wishes for immortality to the great leaders."

This year's observance is expected to be more subdued, as North Korea traditionally reserves large-scale celebrations for every fifth and 10th key anniversaries. The visit aligns with Kim Jong-un's ongoing efforts to solidify his position as a standalone leader, reducing his reliance on the legacies of his predecessors.

Furthermore, an update from South Korea's unification ministry suggests a revision in the status of party secretary Ri Hi-yong. Contrary to earlier assessments, the ministry now believes Ri Hi-yong may not be a member of the presidium of the party politburo. The presidium represents the apex of leadership within the Workers' Party of Korea.

KCNA's report identified Pak Thae-song, Choe Ryong-hae, and Jo Yong-won as the presidium members who were present during Kim's visit, highlighting the evolving dynamics within North Korea's political hierarchy.
