Seoul: South Korea and the United States held discussions this week in Seoul aimed at modernizing their bilateral alliance and strengthening it into a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two sides emphasized a mutually beneficial approach to enhance their cooperation, as detailed in their joint press release on Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the consultations took place on Thursday and Friday, aligning with the U.S. administration's call for allies and partners to bolster "burden sharing" and address the "pacing threat" posed by an increasingly assertive China. The discussions focused on evolving regional security challenges and the need to adapt the U.S.-ROK Alliance accordingly.
The talks were led by Hong Jee-pio, director general for North American affairs at Seoul's foreign ministry, and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kevin Kim. Key foreign affairs and defense officials from both nations also participated in the discussions, underscoring the significance of the alliance and shared security concerns in the region.
