Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung engaged in strategic phone discussions with Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation, as announced by Lee's office.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee expressed his gratitude to President Tokayev for his congratulatory message regarding the launch of Lee's administration. The dialogue between the two leaders centered on expanding cooperation in vital sectors, including infrastructure and critical minerals. President Lee emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership established in 2009 and expressed hope for its continued growth. He also conveyed appreciation for Tokayev's support in repatriating the remains of Gen. Hong Beom-do, a key figure in South Korea's fight for independence from Japan's colonial rule.
Gen. Hong Beom-do was renowned for leading Korean forces to significant victories against Japanese troops in 1920. Forced to flee to the Soviet Union in 1921, he was later relocated to present-day Kazakhstan due to Stalin's deportation policy. His remains were returned to South Korea in 2021. President Lee also sought ongoing support for South Korean businesses operating in Kazakhstan.
During a separate conversation with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, both leaders expressed optimism about resuming high-level exchanges and maintaining robust communication following the establishment of the new Korean government. President Lee advocated for strengthening the bilateral ties initiated in 1959, emphasizing potential areas for collaboration such as defense, security, supply chains, and cultural exchanges.
The leaders recognized the substantial potential for increased trade and investment between South Korea and Sweden. President Lee also acknowledged Sweden's role in promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula through its involvement in the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission. Both countries committed to continued collaboration on issues related to the Korean Peninsula.
