S. Korean Nuclear Watchdog to Urge Monitoring of Fukushima Water

Beijing: South Korea's nuclear safety watchdog has announced plans to urge its Chinese and Japanese counterparts to maintain vigilant monitoring of Japan's future releases of Fukushima water. This initiative will be discussed during a high-level tripartite meeting later this week.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) will participate in the 15th Top Regulators' Meeting (TRM) involving South Korea, Japan, and China. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Beijing on Thursday and Friday. The trilateral TRM, launched in 2008, aims to promote the sharing of information on nuclear regulations and enhance cooperation on emergency response systems. The previous meeting, the 14th TRM, was held virtually in 2022 and hosted by South Korea.

During the forthcoming meeting, the NSSC plans to seek detailed information on Japan's strategies for managing and inspecting the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The commission will also emphasize the importance of Japan's adherence to international safety standards in the release of treated wastewater.

The three countries are also expected to review the outcomes of joint nuclear disaster response drills conducted in South Korea in 2023 and Japan earlier this year. The NSSC highlighted their commitment to ensuring these drills evolve from repetitive exercises into practical training sessions that strengthen emergency preparedness systems.
