Lee to Host People’s Appointment Ceremony on Liberation Day

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung will commemorate his election by the people during the "People's Appointment Ceremony" on August 15, which aligns with the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, his office announced on Monday. The ceremony will take place at Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul, alongside the official Liberation Day celebrations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the event is being organized as Lee took office on June 4 without undergoing a formal inauguration ceremony. This followed his victory in a snap election held after the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed due to a failed martial law attempt in December.

Woo Sang-ho, the senior presidential secretary for political affairs, stated, "The upcoming ceremony will proclaim that the people are the true owners of the state and reaffirm the president's commitment to honoring the will of the sovereign people while advancing South Korea as a leading nation."

The event will extend invitations to former presidents, excluding Yoon, who is currently in custody facing insurrection charges linked to the martial law attempt. Additionally, the guest list includes lawmakers, citizens noted for their contributions to national safeguarding and development, residents of border areas, cultural figures, and experts from a range of fields.
