Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has persistently refused to participate in questioning by citing health issues, has been deemed fit for questioning by the Seoul Detention Center, as announced on Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon is currently under arrest for his attempt at martial law in December and has ignored numerous summonses for questioning by special counsels investigating his martial law attempt and allegations related to his wife. A medical officer at the detention center stated, "He does not appear to have any serious health issues that would prevent him from being questioned or attending a trial," in response to inquiries from the ruling Democratic Party's special committee on special counsel probes.
Earlier in the day, lawmakers from the special committee visited the detention center in Uiwang, located just south of Seoul, to inquire about Yoon's condition amid concerns that he might be receiving preferential treatment. The detention center has reported challenges in using physical force to bring Yoon in for questioning, given his status as a former president.
On Wednesday, the Democratic Party initiated the special committee to support three ongoing special counsel probes related to Yoon's failed martial law attempt, corruption allegations involving his wife, and the death of a Marine.
