Hanwha Aerospace Reports 79.9% Surge in Q2 Net Profit on Robust Defense Exports

Seoul: Hanwha Aerospace Co., a leading defense and space company based in South Korea, announced a significant increase in its second-quarter net profit, climbing 79.9 percent year-on-year. The substantial gain was attributed to strong defense product exports and equity gains.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the company's net profit for the three months ending June 30 rose sharply to 287.7 billion won (approximately US$207.1 million), compared to 159.9 billion won during the same period last year. A company spokesperson attributed the impressive bottom line to boosted exports of defense systems, specifically highlighting the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher, as well as equity gains from Hanwha Ocean Co., which recently secured lucrative shipbuilding orders.

Looking forward, Hanwha Aerospace has expressed its intent to concentrate on acquiring additional defense contracts in the Middle East and European regions. The company also aims to explore new growth avenues by preparing for the fourth launch of the domestically developed Nuri space rocket, scheduled for November.

In a strategic move, Hanwha Aerospace entered into a 24 billion-won agreement with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in July. This agreement provides Hanwha Aerospace exclusive rights to manufacture and launch the Nuri rocket until 2032, potentially opening new revenue streams for the company.

The company's operating profit more than doubled, reaching 864.4 billion won in the second quarter, up from 337.2 billion won in the previous year. Revenue also saw a significant rise, surging to 6.27 trillion won from the previous 2.33 trillion won over the same period.

For the first half of the year, Hanwha Aerospace reported a more than threefold increase in net income, totaling 497 billion won, up from 162.5 billion won a year prior. The operating profit surged to 1.43 trillion won from 355 billion won, while sales jumped to 11.76 trillion won from 3.78 trillion won, showcasing the company's robust growth trajectory.
