Seoul: Former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min has filed for a review of the legality of his arrest following his detainment last week. Lee faces allegations related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's imposition of martial law.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul Central District Court is set to conduct a hearing to determine whether the arrest procedures adhered to due process and if Lee's continued detainment is warranted. The court's decision could lead to Lee's release from the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, situated just south of Seoul. His arrest was sanctioned last Friday on charges of insurrection, abuse of power, and perjury.
Under legal provisions, the court must assess the suspect and examine the evidence within 48 hours of the review request to decide the legality and necessity of the arrest. Special prosecutors investigating the martial law incident allege that Lee played a supportive role in the December decree by failing to prevent Yoon from illegally declaring martial law.
Additional accusations against Lee include directing police and fire services to disrupt utilities to media outlets critical of Yoon's administration. Lee's legal team has reportedly refuted most of these claims.
