Edmonton: Hyundai Rotem Co., the rolling stock division of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group, announced the successful delivery of the first set of trams to Edmonton, Canada, under a supply agreement established in 2021. This delivery is a significant milestone in the development of Edmonton's Valley Line West light rail transit project.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the initial sets of trams are part of a substantial 218.8 billion-won (US$157.3 million) contract aimed at enhancing the city's public transportation infrastructure. Before officially entering service, the delivered trams will undergo approximately 2,000 kilometers of trial operations to ensure their readiness and reliability.
Hyundai Rotem has outlined a plan to deliver all ordered vehicles in stages, with the final delivery scheduled for 2027. The trams feature sophisticated temperature control systems designed to maintain a comfortable environment for passengers, even in extreme cold conditions of minus 40 degrees Celsius.
"This marks our first entry into the North American tram market," the company stated, emphasizing its commitment to providing a safe and efficient transportation solution for Edmonton's residents.
