S. Korea and Japan Plan Summit in Tokyo Amid Renewed Diplomatic Efforts

Seoul: The offices of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have been coordinating to hold a summit in Tokyo later this month, as reported by a Japanese news outlet. This meeting is anticipated to take place around August 23, according to the sources cited in the report.

According to Yonhap News Agency, if the summit materializes, it will mark President Lee's inaugural visit to Japan since he assumed office in early June. This event is poised to signal the revival of "shuttle diplomacy" between the leaders of South Korea and Japan. The two leaders last convened in person on June 17 during the Group of Seven summit in Canada, where they deliberated on enhancing bilateral relations and strengthening trilateral collaboration with the United States.

In addition to the Tokyo summit, there is an expectation that President Lee will visit Washington for his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month. However, the South Korean presidential office has yet to disclose the official schedule for this anticipated visit.
