Seoul: Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s key newswire, has announced the launch of its Vietnamese-language news service, which utilizes AI technology for translation. The service aims to enhance translation quality and accuracy by translating Korean- and English-language news articles into Vietnamese. This process is further refined through copyediting by a native speaker and a final review by a Korean editor with AI assistance.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the new service is designed to cater to Vietnamese readers who have immigrated to Korea or those interested in Korean life. The Vietnamese news website (vi.yna.co.kr) features a dedicated section for practical information, including government immigration policies and employment opportunities for foreign workers. Additionally, it offers real-time updates on North Korean developments, economic news, cutting-edge technology, sports, and Korean pop culture.
Hwang Dae-il, the president and CEO of Yonhap News Agency, expressed optimism about the service’s impact, stating, “We expect Yonhap’s Vietnamese service to contribute to social integration by reducing the information gap for 270,000 Vietnamese residents in Korea and to help with exchange and cooperation with Vietnam, which has emerged as Korea’s third-largest trading partner.”
In a congratulatory message, Vu Viet Trang, president of the Vietnam News Agency, the official state-run news outlet of Vietnam, remarked, “We are confident that Yonhap’s Vietnamese service will serve as a strong bridge between the peoples of the two countries. It will also help the Vietnamese community in Korea gain a richer understanding of Korean society.”
The launch of the Vietnamese-language service marks the seventh foreign-language news service provided by Yonhap News Agency. The agency first began its English-language news service to 50 overseas missions in 1989 and later introduced services in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, and French over the following years. Yonhap News plans to continue expanding its foreign news services by leveraging diverse technologies to safeguard information sovereignty and bridge the global information gap.
