Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) and the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) were preparing for a confrontation as the DP plans to unilaterally propose one of three controversial broadcasting bills. The bill is intended to reduce the government's influence over public broadcasters.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the bill is part of a trio of contentious broadcasting proposals pushed by the DP. These bills aim to alter the governance structure of the public broadcasters KBS, MBC, and EBS by significantly increasing the number of their board directors and granting more influence to media and broadcasting associations.
The proposed amendment to the Foundation for Broadcast Culture Act seeks to expand the number of board members of the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, a major shareholder of public broadcaster MBC, from nine to 13. This change has sparked a debate between the DP and the conservative PPP. The PPP argues that the bills will increase the presence of progressive figures on the boards of public broadcasters.
