Seoul: Korean Air Co. announced its collaboration with LIG Nex1 Co. to bid for a significant government project worth 1.78 trillion won (US$1.27 billion) aimed at developing an electronic warfare aircraft for the Air Force. The partnership marks a strategic move to enhance the country's defense capabilities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two companies plan to present their final proposal in early September. If selected as the primary contractors, Korean Air will be responsible for the integration and modification of the aircraft, while LIG Nex1 will focus on developing and installing the electronic warfare systems. The project centers around converting a mid-sized commercial jet into a special mission aircraft capable of intercepting and analyzing enemy radar and communications signals.
The initiative is crucial as electronic warfare aircraft are instrumental in modern military operations. These aircraft have the capability to jam enemy radar and communications, disrupting command networks and disabling air defenses. By opting to modify an existing commercial aircraft, the Air Force aims for a solution that is both quicker and more efficient than building a new plane from scratch.
LIG Nex1 brings to the table its experience in developing advanced electronic warfare systems for various military applications, including the KF-21 fighter jet and naval ships. Meanwhile, Korean Air leverages its extensive background in military aircraft maintenance and drone development, promising an effective partnership.
A Korean Air official noted the company's long-standing technology and infrastructure, highlighting its role in bolstering the military's advanced capabilities and elevating Korea's defense industry on a global scale.
