Singer Psy Under Investigation for Alleged Prescription Drug Violations

Seoul: Singer-rapper Psy is currently under police investigation for allegedly violating medical laws by obtaining prescription psychotropic drugs through third parties without attending in-person hospital visits, as reported by police officials.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul Seodaemun Police Station has launched an investigation into Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, along with a doctor from a university hospital. They have been booked on charges related to having third parties, including Psy's manager, collect prescribed drugs without the necessary face-to-face medical consultations.

The allegations against Psy involve receiving prescriptions for psychotropic drugs such as Xanax and Stilnox from the university hospital in Seoul without in-person consultations from 2022 until recently. It is claimed that his manager and other third parties collected the medications on his behalf.

Authorities reportedly uncovered these suspicious activities through a tip-off and have since conducted a raid on the university hospital to secure pertinent medical records. Current regulations prohibit proxy prescriptions, emphasizing the necessity for direct patient-doctor interactions.

Xanax and Stilnox are commonly prescribed for sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression, but they carry a high risk of dependence and addiction. Therefore, face-to-face examinations and prescriptions are mandated by law.

However, Psy's attending doctor has denied the allegations, asserting that the treatment was conducted remotely. In response, Psy's agency, P Nation, issued a statement acknowledging the mistake and fault in receiving prescription sleeping pills by proxy. They clarified that Psy has been diagnosed with a chronic sleep disorder and is taking medication as prescribed, but emphasized there was no proxy prescription, even though third parties collected the drugs on some occasions.
