Seoul: The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), a militant labor group, has decided to join a parliament-led social dialogue, marking its first return to labor-management-government talks in 26 years. This decision was announced on Wednesday following a central committee meeting where the proposal was approved by a vote of 142 out of 261 members.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the dialogue was initially proposed last year by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik as a tripartite discussion platform. The KCTU's participation represents a significant shift, as the organization has been boycotting the Economic, Social and Labor Council since 1999. This council serves as a consultation body between the government, business, and labor sectors, providing policy recommendations to the president on labor affairs.
