Seoul: South Korea’s government has announced the conclusion of negotiations with the United States to secure the release of its citizens who were detained during a significant immigration raid at a Hyundai plant located in Georgia. The chief of staff for South Korea’s president has indicated that a chartered plane will be dispatched to bring the detainees home once the necessary administrative procedures are finalized.

According to BBC, Kang Hoon-sik, a senior South Korean official, mentioned that efforts are underway to enhance the visa system to prevent future incidents of this nature. The raid, which has drawn considerable attention, involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials detaining Asian workers, some of whom were seen wearing yellow vests labeled with company names like "Hyundai" and "LG CNS."

ICE has stated that individuals on short-term or recreational visas are not authorized to work in the United States, and the raid was deemed necessary to safeguard American jobs. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent Steven Schrank emphasized that the operation serves as a clear warning to those exploiting the system and undermining the American workforce.

South Korea, a key ally of the US, has committed substantial investments in American manufacturing to mitigate the impact of tariffs. However, the timing of the raid, amid sensitive trade discussions between the two nations, has raised concerns in Seoul. The US administration, under President Trump's leadership, has been promoting foreign investments while simultaneously tightening visa allocations for international companies.

LG Energy Solution, which operates the plant in collaboration with Hyundai, reported that numerous LG employees arrested during the raid were on business trips with various visas or under a visa waiver program. In response to the incident, the company has temporarily halted most business trips to the US and advised its employees currently on assignment there to return to South Korea immediately.

The raid has been widely described as a "shock" by South Korean media, with the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper cautioning that it could have a "chilling effect" on the activities of South Korean businesses in the United States. The Georgia factory, known for producing electric vehicles, had been celebrated by the state's Republican governor as a landmark economic development project, employing 1,200 people. Currently, the detained workers are being held at an ICE facility in Folkston, Georgia. LG Energy Solution disclosed that 47 of its employees, along with approximately 250 contractors at the joint venture factory, were among those detained.
